We are are always looking for ways to better understand the landscapes we manage and protect and that’s why we’re excited to introduce a new tool into our work: a fleet of 12 trail cameras courtesy of Fujitsu.
These camouflaged, motion-activated cameras are already making a big impact on how we observe wildlife. By capturing images and video without disturbing natural behaviour, they allow us to see who’s there and what’s really happening when we’re not around.
What We’ve Discovered So Far
Even in these early stages, the cameras have already revealed a high amount of activity. We’ve captured footage of species that are rarely seen during daytime surveys, as well as unexpected visitors moving through habitats we manage. From the quiet movements of nocturnal mammals to bursts of activity at dawn and dusk, the footage is a reminder of just how alive our sites are and it’s wonderful to see!
We have been busy compiling a list of all the species caught on camera, with 39 species so far…
European Badger, Common Blackbird, Eurasian Blackcap, Eurasian Blue Tit, Brown Rat, Canada Goose, Carrion Crow, Cetti’s Warbler, Common Chiffchaff, Common Buzzard, Common Cuckoo, Common Moorhen, Common Whitethroat, Dunnock, Eurasian Coot, Eurasian Hobby, Eurasian Jackdaw, Eurasian Jay, Eurasian Wren, European Rabbit, European Robin, Great Cormorant, Great Tit, Green Woodpecker, Grey Heron, Grey Squirrel, Grey Wagtail, Little Egret, Little Grebe, Long-tailed Tit, Mallard, Eurasian Magpie, Marsh Frog, Muntjac Deer, Common Pheasant, Red Fox, Roe Deer, Rose-ringed Parakeet, Song Thrush, Stock Dove, Tawny Owl, Eurasian Teal and Wood Pigeon.
